top picks from a dental assistant
Tracy and her son Ryder, age 2.
If you’ve ever wondered what a dental assistant uses at home, we’ve got the skinny. Johnson Dentistry dental assistant and mom, Tracy Amundson, shares a list of her can’t-live-without-items for both she and her family below.
• Sonicare Flexcare toothbrush (she swears by it)
• Sunstar GUM Soft-picks, they’re flexible and tapered to fit even the smallest spaces.
• We always use Listerine after we brush and floss for a 30 second swish (the kids favorite flavor is orange)
• My kids (ages 15, 13, & 2) all use Sonicare’s electric brush for kids.

As parents we can patrol our kids’ teeth when they’re at home with us. But at school, it’s a different story. We don’t have the opportunity to demand toothbrushing after a sugary drink or sticky something. With that in mind, and as they head back to school, try to avoid packing anything that will leave a layer of sugar on their teeth. The worst offenders? High sugar sports drinks, hard candy, non sugar free gum, and gummy fruit chews (the worst!).
